Spring is here in Central New York. Water droplets were over just about everything outside and despite a heavy chill in the air, I wanted to capture some of nature’s wonderful little decorations. On a quick stroll through my front yard, I found this magical object. It’s the remains of a leaf. I thought it was pretty cool looking, seeing all of its beautiful, ornate vein structures in perfect condition, yet the leaf, itself, is long gone.

The Northeast yields the most beautiful autumn season. The colors of the leaves, the crispness in the air, and everything having to do with Halloween. I adore the splash of ghosts, vampires, and witches across neighborhood windows and doors ads that something extra to the season. The smell and feel of a freshly carved pumpkin creates a wormhole to my childhood. Oh, I was infatuated with Trick or Treating. I hit so many houses, I had candy that lasted me through Easter!

I fall in love with fall every year. And as soon as my sweet miss arrives, she is whisked away by Old Man Winter. But, let’s hold on to the fall while we have her! Although I’m not a fan of scary movies, the darkness to them is intriguing. With the haunting season officially upon us, I decided to create a little ‘Self-Portrait’ of yours truly. Enjoy the fall while it is here!

In my past blog, Going Home, I showed an image I created of an ‘abduction’.
I wanted to show you the original image.
It was shot in infrared, hence the greenish hue to it.
Infrared photography is so intriguing to me. It reveals this other world that we cannot see with our own eyes.

Normally, infrared photography is inhibited by too much light when shot during the middle of the day. Even this image, a ton of light is pouring through. However, I’m using a neutral density filter stacked with a polarizing filter. This helps cut out a decent amount of light. Without the neutral density filter, this shot would’ve probably been totally white, washed out from too much light. I’m certainly thinking of getting a second ND filter and stack them, to cut even more light out. Plus, using ND filters in normal lighting/ non-infrared conditions can create really cool stuff too. Just do a google search for neutral density photography.

Without further ado, here is the AFTER & BEFORE of my image. If you’re confused which one was the original, it’s the one where I’m NOT being abducted by a UFO!

I planted a whole pot of these flowers and only ONE grew. This one, I actually let germinate in my kitchen closet for over a week before planting it. One seed in a whole packet. Oh well, I’m happy to have at least one grow!

A romantic summer’s evening in August; mid 70-degree weather, crickets chirping, fireflies flashing, bullfrogs bellowing and moonlight magically painting shadows in the darkness. Due to my somewhat secluded location, I knew there would be very little light pollution from the city. This was a great opportunity to take some pictures of the night sky.

I took a few pictures this past Friday up in Hastings, NY, located in Oswego County, about half an hour from Syracuse. This image above is a 30 second exposure and that bright light behind the trees is the moon! Having taken pictures like this in the past, I know the biggest question people ask me:

How is this at night when everything is so lit up?

Normally when taking pictures, you point, you shoot, lens opens, lens shuts, and you’re done. With images like the one above, once you press down and the lens opens…and will remain open for however long you tell it to or set it for. If I had just snapped a shot, this pic would be very dark. However, giving it 30 seconds, it’s absorbed all available light (thanks, Mr. Moon!) that entire time, so everything appears lit up. Oh yeah, you NEED a tripod for images like this. If you can hold a camera perfectly still for even 5 seconds,

With every long exposure image, I feel as if I’m peeling the night off of my surroundings. It’s like capturing an alternate reality. And since I’m standing there in the darkness, I have no clue what the picture is going to look like once I get to see the big reveal. It’s exciting, shot after shot.

Thanks for stopping by! If you enjoyed this, why not share it with your friends?

Who else is out there? Where did we come from? Were we placed here? Will ‘someone’ come back for us some day? Has another form of intelligent life created a far-superior civilization over our own? Should we strive to find out? ARE we being watched?

Every year for the past 4 years or so, I’ve entered the realm of firework photography. They have a great firework show every July 3rd, in my hometown, Brewerton, NY, on Oneida Lake. I see (and laugh) at everyone who drives in to see the show. Why do I laugh at them? You should see how much congestion of traffic this annual event generates! I thank my lucky stars that I can walk to the water’s edge, anywhere in town, and be stress-free the entire evening. Okay, now I feel guilty for laughing at these poor people. I’m very, very, sorry.

What I’ve learned is that catching that ‘perfect shot’ is a mix of luck, knowledge, and…..luck! I don’t know what they’re launching off that barge in the water. They could be tiny or they could be gigantic bursts of beauty. From trial and error, I’ve figured the longest exposure isn’t always best. If you caught it ‘just right’ and they blasted up a ton of fireworks within my camera’s 30 second-max window, the result can be a cluttered, bright, mess! Dialing the time down between 10 and 20 seconds seem to be best. I try to keep an eye on the barge to see when a flare is being placed to ignite the next batch. I then set my timer to take the picture in 2 seconds. This ensures I’m not touching the camera to take the shot, which may MOVE the camera.

My goal is to see the tail of the firework, booming up from the barge, and then to see the burst(s). If the exposure is too long (the 30 seconds I’ve mentioned) it limits your time to adjust the settings for the next shot. They don’t blast these things off all night long. The display runs about 20 minutes, maybe less, so you have a window of time you’re working with. If I did 30 second exposures the whole time, my camera takes an ADDITIONAL 30 seconds to ‘process’ for me to see the resulting image. 20 second exposure would equal 20 seconds of processing and so forth.

Having them blast off from a barge, on Oneida Lake, in Brewerton, NY, gives the added bonus of catching reflections of the bursts on the water. Below are a few of the shots from this year.
